Interior materials and the tactile control feel are outstanding, setting a benchmark for the segment — not that there are really any apples-to-apples 1 Series competitors. The movements and clicks of the turn indicator stalk, window switches and stereo/HVAC buttons imbue a sense of impeccably engineered quality. The 135i is certainly on the pricey side, but it's important to consider that it gives up nothing in terms of interior quality to the vastly more expensive 6 Series.

The optional blind-spot warning system is quite useful, however, emitting a clear beep whenever you start to change lanes with a vehicle in your blind spot. It can be overzealous, frequently beeping even when the vehicle is more than a car length behind you, but overall we found that it added to our peace of mind.

The new touchscreen navigation system is much more user-friendly, with its screen integrated into the center console instead of the pop-up screen/joystick-based unit of the previous 5. An auxiliary jack and 12-volt power outlet come standard and are easy to access at the base of the center console. Satellite radio is available, as is a six-CD changer hidden behind the nav's touchscreen.

Sync this into your brain: Sync is cool. Essentially, it's a Microsoft-developed, voice-activated control system for portable MP3 players plus Bluetooth cell phone connectivity for hands-free calling. It comes standard on the Focus SES.

Most portable MP3 players are compatible. You just need to use a special cable to hook up the player to the combo auxiliary audio jack/USB port. Sync will scan the MP3 player's musical contents and then one can control the player using voice commands, such as "Play artist: Madonna," or "Play playlist: Driving Songs." Sync confirms commands with a synthesized voice ("playing: Madonna"). Song information is also presented on a dash-mounted display. Other nice touches: MP3 players get their batteries charged while connected, and you can use the steering-wheel-mounted controls to skip through tracks.
